Inspired by one of the most recognizable self-portraits in art history, Van Go-Hawk reimagines Vincent van Gogh through a contemporary pointillist language while paying tribute to the work of Mr. Brainwash. Built from thousands of individually painted dots layered over dozens of applications, the portrait transforms as the viewer moves through space. Up close, it dissolves into an abstract field of colour and texture; from a distance, Van Gogh's unmistakable likeness gradually emerges. Inspired by the Gestalt principle of perceptual completion, the work explores how the mind instinctively organizes fragmented information into a coherent whole.
The inspiration for this collection began after spending time along the California coast in Orange County , walking among palm trees and visiting contemporary galleries. After completing my Mona Lisa in 2024, I envisioned a series that would reinterpret celebrated cultural icons through this contemporary language of painted dots. During a visit to the Mr. Brainwash Museum shortly before its closure in January, one artwork stood above all the others: his reinterpretation of Vincent van Gogh's self-portrait featuring a bold mohawk. Having admired Mr. Brainwash's work for nearly twenty years since discovering Banksy's film Exit Through the Gift Shop, that moment became the catalyst for creating Van Go-Hawk.
Rather than creating a direct reinterpretation of Van Gogh alone, this painting acknowledges a creative lineage, STEEP Daniels after Mr. Brainwash after Vincent van Gogh , bridging classical art history, contemporary street art, and a distinctly modern visual language.
Each original is hand-painted in Toronto using acrylic on canvas, signed and dated by the artist, and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. No reproductions are painted over, and every work is created as a one-of-one original. Only one exists.
